Iliso empowers women to start their own sewing enterprises. With help from the Ackerman Pick n Pay Foundation, Nutrimetics Australia and the Community Works Programme (CWP), we have trained more than 60 women to make and sell aprons, placemats, curtains and other items. Our sewers receive 75 percent of income from their sales, while 25 percent goes to Iliso.
We train staff and volunteers to create stylish greeting cards using traditional, iconic Shweshwe fabric. Wilderness Safaris and Roots Africa Tours are among our growing list of retailers. Card sales provide a stipend for our volunteers.
The Iliso Choir regularly performs at hotels, weddings and other events. The group, numbering around 50 members from age 15 upwards, travelled to Germany in 2014 – exposing members to new opportunities and experiences – and has performed for the French Consulate on several occasions.
